How to Clean Tile Grout

Tiles are durable, beautiful, and easy to clean, but cleaning the grout? That’s a separate story. Grout is vulnerable to stains due to its generally light coloration and porous nature. Fortunately, it is possible to repair and clean tile grout using home items and a little bit of elbow grease.

How to Clean Tile Grout

how to clean tile groutGrout is one of the most frequent causes of problems in any home. It is a porous, absorbent, and tough-to-clean pasty material that fills the spaces between your tiles. First and foremost, when installing tile, choose a darker grout color rather than a spotless white since it will cover dirt better.

However, you don’t simply want to cover dirt; you want to keep everything clean. So before you get started, remember that it’s better to start with the mildest solution possible with any cleaning endeavor. If you’re unsure about a grout cleaner, test it in a hidden area first.

Solutions and Procedures on How to Clean Tile Grout

From mildest to the most concentrated solution:

  1. Scrub filthy grout by using a stiff-bristled brush and simply warm water.

Spray the grout lines with warm water, scrub in a circular motion, then let it dry.

  1. Spray with a mixture of warm water and vinegar of equal parts for several minutes.

Turn to vinegar for heavy dirt and light stains. Make a half-and-half mix of vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. After spraying the grout, wait for five minutes before scrubbing it with a stiff brush.

  1. Apply a baking soda paste and a vinegar spray.

Cover grout lines with water and a paste of baking soda, then spray on the vinegar solution to add even more cleaning power. Scrub with a stiff brush and cleanse with plain water after the liquid has stopped foaming.

  1. Add some hydrogen peroxide.

For moderate stains, hydrogen peroxide may be required, which is readily accessible in most medical stores. You may use the product on its own or mix it with baking soda and make a paste.

  1. For up to 15 minutes, apply oxygen bleach.

Use oxygen bleach as a grout cleaner for tougher stains and filthy grout. However, make sure that your area is well-ventilated, whatever product you choose. Then read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. It would be best to leave the oxygen bleach solution for up to 10 to 15 minutes before washing. After that, rinse thoroughly with clean water to prevent dirt from resettling in the grout lines.

  1. Consider using a commercial product.

For quick removal of mold and mildew, use grout cleaners available on the market. It would help to restore your bright tile grout lines. Either you scrub with a brush or spray and wipe.

Spray-on solutions claim to work without scrubbing, which can save your time and energy. However, they might also contain more vital acids, chlorine bleach, or solvents. So, before you start using a product, read the ingredients list and follow the directions.

  1. Use a small amount of chlorine bleach on the grout.

Use chlorine bleach to clean grout in severe instances.

Rinse off all of the above attempts before applying, especially the vinegar. Furthermore,  residues of vinegar coupled with bleach can release a very deadly chlorine gas into the air. Also, please don’t make this a habit: Caustic cleansers degrade grout over time, so used them on a limited basis only.

  1. home projects

Use steam to clean for the worst grout stains.

Cleaning grout—or, for that matter, many hard surfaces in the house—with the best steam mops may be an effective and ecologically friendly process.
